In unveiling the new Mustang Mach-E, Ford has booked a seat in the same electric car club that’s nowadays frequented by the leading big-name automakers: Tesla, Audi, Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Jaguar, and Porsche. Admittedly, the Blue Oval did arrive a tad late to the party. Now, threatened by the risk of falling behind its rivals that were already building and selling electric cars, Ford needed to come up with a quick and cost-effective solution that would allow it to launch it’s first serious electric car as soon as possible. The savior was none other than Ford’s iconic Mustang nameplate and, as exciting as that might sound, it will hold no weight in the model’s success (or failure).
The Ford Mustang Mach-E has officially debuted, but the big news is that the folks over at the Mach-E forums discovered some URLs on Ford’s official website that includes more information about the SUV than FoMoCo wanted us to know right now, including pricing. It seems that the Mustang Mach-E will have a starting price similar to Tesla’s Model Y, so it’s time to see how the two electric SUVs compare.
You might not agree with Ford’s decision to use the Mustang name (of the Mach name, for that matter) on a crossover, but at least it does carry some Mustang DNA. The 2020 Ford Mustang Mach-E electric SUV has finally launched with up to 300 miles of range and as much as 459 horsepower and 612 pound-feet of torque. The Premium and First Edition trim levels will be available in showrooms starting sometime in early 2020, with the entry-level Select and the California Route 1 trim will hit the market in early 2021. If you want the range-topping GT Performance model, though, you’ll need to wait until late 2021. The Ford Mustang Mach-E has come to usher in a new era for Ford and the Mustang Name. It’s the first Mustang EV slated for production, and it’s the first crossover to wear the Mustang Name. Along with its debut, we learned that the Mach-E can charge at the rate of 3 miles per hour on a typical, 120-Volt home outlet, and we started wondering: just how does that compare to other models on the market?
The Mustang has a long and vibrant history, but the future is here, and the Mustang Mach-E is the proverbial looking glass into the future of not only the Mustang name but Ford as a whole. The Mustang Mach-E is the first production electric Mustang, and it’s the first crossover to bear the Mustang name too. It comes with a promise of up to 300 miles in range, up to 459 horsepower, and access to 75-percent of America’s charging infrastructure, but there’s a catch.
Tesla’s ability to monetize just about anything under the sun is back in the news. As if flamethrowers, tequilas, and branded hats aren’t enough, the Tesla is now offering a “Plaid Mode” t-shirt to commemorate the arrival of the new range-topping version of the Model S. The shirt, which is literally available in Tesla’s online shop was designed to, according to the company, “celebrate Tesla’s incredible performance mode.” It’s made from 100% cotton, and, apparently, it’s also the “next best thing to riding shotgun at the Nurburgring.” The Tesla “Plaid Mode” t-shirt is available for $35 at sizes ranging from “XS” to “XXL.” At this point, if you haven’t bought one yet, we don’t know what you’re waiting for.
After what seems like forever, the Ford Mustang Mach-E is set to debut today, November 17, 2019, at 8:50 pm EST, 5:50 PM PST, and 1:50 AM GST during a live-stream event that you can watch right here on Topspeed.com in the video embed below. The live stream takes place in Los Angeles and is set to run for just one-half hour, after which reservations will open for early adopters.
Of course, we’ve already learned a lot about the Mustang Mach-E thanks to a number of leaks (you can see those in our [full speculative review->art181042) but, in case you’re cramped for time, what we’ve learned includes:Approximate range of 300 miles on most trims Most trims will hit 60 mph in the 5.5-6.5 second range The range-topping GT trim will only be good for 235 miles but will hit 60 mph in the mid-3-second range AWD or RWD is available, but RWD is limited to the Mach-E Premium, and Mach-E Select trims. Pricing will fall between $43,895 and $60,500 It will sport a lot of Mustang-inspired cues including the rear taillights and parts of the front fascia Should compete with the Jaguar I-Pace, Tesla Model Y, and Mercedes EQC Reservations will start at just $500, but a delivery date has yet to be announced.

Ford’s upcoming all-electric and Mustang-inspired SUV was caught testing in the wild with a production body. The crossover is wrapped in camouflage from bumper to bumper, but the details show through the wrap, so it’s our best look at this vehicle yet. The Ford Mach-E, as it’s expected to be called, will make its official debut at the 2019 Los Angeles Auto Show, most likely in pre-production form.
Today, we want to pay tribute to the Porsche 918 - a cold-hearted, track-ready slayer of the McLaren P1 and Ferrari Laferrari. Powered by a 4.6-liter V-8 and two electric motors, this Porsche supercar can hit 60 mph in 2.8 seconds, 124 mph in 7.2 seconds, and 186 mph in 23 seconds. Add on the Weissach package and its 77-pound weight reduction, and you’ll hit the same sprints in 2.6, 7.2, and 19.9 seconds, respectively. The exterior is all Porsche, and the design is still represented on new models to this day, but the 918 just stands on its out and is a great throwback, so we’ve labeled it as our wallpaper of the day.
